Many envision a food photographer’s day as simply snapping pictures of beautifully plated meals. While that’s certainly a major component, the reality involves a much broader spectrum of tasks essential for delivering perfectly curated, impactful images to clients. My role encompasses everything from initial concept development to meticulous post-production, ensuring every image tells a story and effectively communicates a brand’s message.
Before even touching the camera, a significant amount of work goes into understanding a client’s vision. This includes in-depth consultations to grasp their brand identity, target audience, and specific goals for the photography. Are we aiming for a rustic, homey feel? Or a sleek, modern, and minimalist aesthetic? What emotions do we want to evoke? This initial dialogue informs everything from prop selection and backdrop choices to lighting setups and overall composition.
The Creative Process: From Concept to Capture
My typical workflow involves:
- Concept Development & Mood Boarding: Translating a client’s brief into a visual plan. This often includes creating mood boards to define the color palette, textures, styling, and desired atmosphere.
- Prop Sourcing & Styling: Selecting appropriate props – plates, cutlery, linens, and other accessories – that complement the food without overpowering it. Styling is crucial for creating visual interest and depth.
- Lighting Mastery: Whether utilizing natural light from a window or employing artificial studio lighting, understanding light is paramount. I manipulate light to enhance textures, define shapes, and create a mouth-watering appeal, often using diffusers, reflectors, and flags to achieve the perfect balance.
- Composition & Storytelling: Carefully arranging elements within the frame to create a balanced, aesthetically pleasing, and narrative-driven image. The goal is to make the viewer feel like they can almost taste or smell the food.
- Post-Production Excellence: This critical phase involves editing, color correction, retouching, and enhancing the images to meet the highest standards. It’s where the raw capture truly comes to life, ensuring consistency across all deliverables and aligning with the client’s brand guidelines.
- Client Communication & Collaboration: Maintaining open lines of communication throughout the project, providing updates, and welcoming feedback to ensure the final results exceed expectations.
My experience extends to working with various food and beverage brands, from a Colorado-based coffee alternative company to a large supermarket chain. However, my assignments as a PNW and local Portland Food Photographer always hold a special place in my heart, particularly when I get to support the entrepreneurial dreams of a close friend. When my long-time friend Nate embarked on the exciting journey of opening his first business, Stellar Juices, and reached out to me for their menu photography, I didn’t hesitate. This was more than just a client project; it was an opportunity to support a friend’s passion and bring his vision to life through my lens. Capturing the essence of a brand, especially one with such a strong commitment to health and freshness, is incredibly fulfilling.
One of my resolutions for the new year was to share more behind-the-scenes insights and client work here on the blog. Nate’s objective was clear: to acquire a comprehensive collection of images featuring their entire menu, alongside artistic shots of individual, fresh ingredients that highlight the quality and purity of their offerings.
The On-Location Studio: Crafting the Perfect Shot
For the Stellar Juices shoot, I arrived at their beautifully designed restaurant in Olympia, Washington, fully equipped and ready to transform a corner of their space into a functional photography studio. My gear included a range of professional cameras and lenses, portable lighting equipment (though I always prioritize natural light when available), a variety of backdrops to create different moods, and an assortment of props tailored to enhance the vibrant appeal of their juices and smoothie bowls.
The collaboration with their head chef was seamless. While I meticulously set up my portable studio near a window – leveraging the soft, natural light that is often ideal for food photography – their chef expertly prepared each menu item, ensuring every dish was fresh, perfectly garnished, and presented with impeccable precision. This synchronized effort is key to capturing food at its peak, preserving its integrity and visual appeal before the camera.
Spotlight on Stellar Juices: A Plant-Based Revolution
